Intro
First of all let’s take a look at what Genymotion is.
At its very basic, Genymotion is an installable third-party application that lets you create a virtual machine through which it delivers real-time Android emulation on Windows, Mac or Linux. Besides emulating Android environment, it provides complete ADB access which means you can side load Android APKs and run them just as fine on your computer.
There are a bunch of other features to explore but the best way will be to just dive in and try them out for yourself. So let us begin:
Download And Install
The first thing you need to do is download and install Genymotion on your computer.
In order to do that, head over to their website and click Sign up at the top right corner.
In the sign up page, provide your username, email, and password credentials, checkmark terms of privacy statements – and optionally specify Enterprise size and Usage type – then click Sign up.
The folks at Genymotion will then send you an email requiring you to activate your account via clicking the activation link in verification email. Once you’ve done that, you can download it on your computer.
As mentioned earlier in this guide, Genymotion supports multiple operating systems. So when you are on the download page, locate the Windows version and click on the ‘download Genymotion’ link to begin download.
It should also be noted that the Windows variant comes included with Oracle VirtualBox and the whole installation package is just above a 100MB in size.
Once downloaded, just install Genymotion to your desired location on your PC.
Create Your First Virtual Device
Now that you’ve installed Genymotion, it’s time to create your first Virtual Device. Simply launch the application and click YES when prompted about adding a virtual device.
In the Virtual device creation wizard click Connect. After which, you will basically be required to log in to your Genymotion account to download the virtual device.
Simply specify your username and password credentials you entered during sign up and click Connect to fetch the available virtual devices list.
The database carries a huge list of virtual devices including the likes of Galaxy S4, HTC One, Galaxy Nexus, Sony Xperia Z as well as several other Android phones and tablets. The list displays the virtual device name and the accompanied Android version. Simply highlight the one you need to run and click Next to begin download.
Just sit back and let Genymotion download your selected virtual device.
Run The Virtual Device
Once the download is complete, you can launch Android emulation in virtual environment.
Just highlight the downloaded virtual device and click Play at top menu. You will be prompted whether to setup ADB access or not. Click No if you want to configure ADB at a later time.
And that’s it! You will now have a full-fledged Android operating system working on your PC. You can use it to access the internet, play Android games, and tinker with just about any other feature that Android offers.
The latest version of Genymotion also comes with Google Apps.
The interface carries a bunch of navigation controls to the right and bottom of the application window to control the virtual device as well as Android itself.
To sum it up, if you want to run Android on Windows, Mac or Linux, try Genymotion.
